His head is two layers of foam forwards from his neck and one forward from the rest of his outfit, so that's just the natural shadow cast by it. :>

What's your process like? Do you make like an outline, get the paper, start cutting and see what happens, or do you plan everything out layer by layer?

I draw up the entire piece onto some cheap printer paper, then trace that (backwards) with some carbon paper onto the back of the paper I'm going to use before i cut it. I used to redraw it onto the good paper using my sketches as reference, but it was pretty inaccurate so this way works better. You can see the sketch for this piece in a WIP i posted on tumblr [link] :>

As for paper, i have a huge stack of it in every colour imagiunable so i just mix and match as i go. I just wing it with the layers too, and it hasn't failed so far. :>
